Our Mission

The Africa Association of Teacher Educators (AFRATE) aims to bring an inclusive

African voice to the World Federation of Associations of Teacher Educators (WFATE) by

creating an Africa-wide teacher and educator networking forum for collaborative

cross-national professional networking, action-oriented research, resource/expertise

sharing and an overarching nurturing supportive culture necessary for efficient,

cost-effective, and sustainable pre/in-service teacher education across Africa’s 54

nations and global diaspora.

Who are we?

The AFRATE mission is to advance quality teacher education by nurturing and

supporting sustainable dialogue, networking, cross-national research, and best practice

dissemination across Africa and its overseas diaspora, in order to enhance pre-service

and in-service teacher education, empowered by empirically informed and locally

responsive classroom instructional practices, evidence-based decision-making, student

differentiated learning mastery, innovative crowd-sourcing of instructional resources,

increased teacher/student retention, and expanded access to quality education for all

children across urban and rural Africa.

Membership

Membership is composed of teachers and teacher educators from a broad range of Africa’s 54

nations and their overseas diaspora.

The AFRATE affiliate chapter of the World Federation of Associations of Teacher Educators

(WFATE) is informed by the experiential skilled expertise from demonstrated training and

decades of grade school work experience of members and diverse global resource leaders with

teacher training institutional and higher education/research backgrounds.

AFRATE independently self-directs sustained development and management of structures,

contents, and procedural processes that ensure authentic real time responsive and reflective

pre/in-service education to meet the needs and realities of teachers and teacher educators in

multifaceted rural and urban contexts of Africa and its diasporas.

The AFRATE approach and vision are informed by the demonstrated experience in international

development and international education exchange of its founding members, to allow for unique

identification and leveraging of under-tapped local, continental, and global resource pathways for

enhancing teacher education, classroom instructional practices, and career-long proficiencies.

AFRATE leverages these core values to activate untapped capacities that effectively and

efficiently inform and advance localized educator efficiencies to unlock the innate potential of our

youth for sustainable extended growth and poverty eradication.
